Welcome to our final installment – tip 5 from our Top 5 Tips on Decorating your Speech Room on a Budget! This week we are having a look at how makeovers and remodels can be an affordable way to help with decorating your speech room.
Tip Five: Makeovers
All of our classrooms have many things in common – essential items like desks, bulletin boards, filing cabinets, storage bays and bookshelves to name a few. These items may be ones you have inherited when you first came to your classroom and they are the key infrastructure of your room – expensive items that you cannot be replacing often. Many of these items can be remodeled and made over to make them more ‘chic’ – more you!
There are so many great examples out there, but I have chosen the simple bookshelf to show you how some people have made over an old bookshelf and turned it into something fabulous! A repaint can really help an old-fashioned bookcase come up-to-date! Or if you are feeling really adventurous, you could set a feature pattern – (vinyl or even wallpaper)- on the back of the shelving area like Connie at Salvage Saavy has done with this fab project:
And I just had to show you this one too – not only has the bookshelf had a makeover, but painting it in chalkboard paint gives it another purpose too – love this!

With a little bit of imagination and creativity (and a little browsing on Pinterest!!), a boring old every day piece of furniture can become something fun and beautiful! That’s what we love about decorating!
